Japan has produced way more brilliant off-road bikes than anyone could have predicted back in the early days. Engineers and designers from the big four manufacturers have constantly tried new ideas and tweaked old ones.
It’s not all pure function, though. They have consistently produced machines that are as pleasing on the eye as they are on the backside. They make them good but they make them beautiful as well. I remember a magazine article I read many years ago where a Yamaha employee explained to the interviewer that when an engineering breakthrough ruined the aesthetic of a bike, they all had to keep working at it until they got it to look right. For them function and form were two equal parts of one magnificent whole.
The DT230 Lanza is a wonderful example of this. It is a compact, powerful lightweight, liquid-cooled two-stroke with plenty of punch. Quite capable on the roads and absolutely loves bouncing around on the rocks and mud. But on top of that it is a beautiful machine. If a Serow and a TDR250 got together and made a baby, it would look something like this. A little more of a puffed up chest than a Serow, with the huge exhaust chamber of the TDR, but in a smaller, lighter package. It really is something special.
This is a 1998 model in blue. Although not immaculate it is very tidy all over and very low mileage. Electric start and kick start. Our colleagues in Japan have put new tyres on her and run her through checks so we know all is well mechanically.
It is UK registered. Will come with a fresh MOT. Delivery anywhere.
