We are delighted to be able to present this extraordinarily rare Japanese domestic market F3.
The 750cc F1 created a renewed buzz around Ducatis as sports bikes and it didn’t take long for the Italian manufacturer to create a model specifically for the Japanese market. There are two main classes or motorcycle licence in Japan, one up to 400cc and the other unlimited. Getting the unlimited licence costs significantly more than the mid-range one so there is, and always has been, a huge market for bikes that sneak in just under the 400cc mark.
Hence, the Japanese domestic market F3 400 was born. While the Italian 350cc F3 was basically a miniature version of the 750, the Japanese domestic market model was unique.
There were a few different versions of the F3 and if you are an aficionado you will probably be familiar with them. This is one of only 94 1987 models that were actually produced in 1987. (About 200 were produced in late 1986.) It has a steel tank, white Veglia dials, fully floating twin front discs and Brembo calipers. The Italian F3 produced 42BHP and this Japanese one 47.
Ours is in extremely good condition. It has the original mirrors which were very hard to source and eye-wateringly expensive. The fairings, frame and wheels are all in excellent condition. The tank is really good although there are some small scratches. (Please take your time over the video, where I do my best to highlight the small imperfections.) There is a small repair on the inside left of the fairing near the top where it meets the stem. The seat has a small crease and a little damage on the rear right, again highlighted in the video.
That all having been said, it is in exceptional condition all over.
The bike requires new belts. We cannot risk running it without new belts being fitted but have been assured it does run. Should the new owner require the belts fitted, that is something we can discuss.
This is an extraordinarily rare machine in beautiful condition. We welcome viewings in person and would be happy to send more phots or videos on request.
