Creatives in the big four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers have given us some wonderful machines over the years. The sheer variety of bikes, from the dead quick to the super cool, stopping off along the way at the really rather quirky, is mind boggling.
In the quirky category, Honda has gifted the world the legendary Monkey and the Dax, Suzuki the MT50, Kawasaki the KV75 and Yamaha this very rare beastie, the Bobby.
A two-stroke single with the fuel tank, oil tank and battery all tucked away into the frame, it is a wonder of compact design. 10-inch rims, 1,055mm wheel base and a dry weight of only 72KG, it’s almost small enough to pop in the boot of your car.
There are plenty of examples of the similarly dimensioned Honda Dax around but the Bobby is a rare find indeed. Rarer still is one with basically no miles. This Bobby reads just 2km on the clock. It’s not immaculate – there are some white spots on the headlight surround, ageing on the reverse of the indicators, engine and hubs, cracks on the tyrewalls (please see photos) – it is very tidy, 45 years old and 100% original. A real find.
These small Japanese bikes from the 70’s and 80’s might look a bit like toys but they are brilliantly engineered and made with quality parts. This little beastie will be a wonderful addition to any mini bike aficionado.
